I believe in KISS by using mostly stock + bond funds. These higher income vehicles don't guarantee better risk/reward long term. If you use them I would do it as part of your stocks.
With that in mind, I only based my decision what to hold on risk/reward and never on high distributions/income.
Example: during 2001-2009 I owned FAIRX which invested a big % in financial, and it had higher income stocks. The decision was based only on risk/reward.
