Consumer Reports is the best unbiased resource of information. To keep it simple, it gives an overall score to each vehicle which consist of several measurements, from reliability to safety, performance, road test performance, owner satisfaction and reporting what went wrong during the year(which I do), crash test and more.
To get over 85 it's great, over 90 it's rare.
The numbers below are from Consumer Reports 04/2021 magazine.
Sedans all the way to $75K+:
Toyota Camry Hybrid 2.5 = 90 (reliability=excellent, 47 MPG overall)
Toyota Camry 2.5 = 88 (reliability=excellent, 32 MPG)
Toyota Avalon Hybrid =88 (42 MPG)
Audi A4 2.0T = 87 (reliability=excellent, 27 MPG)
Infiniti Q50 3.0 T = 85 (reliability=excellent, 22 MPG)
BMW 750I 4.4T = 88 (reliability=average, 21 MPG)
SUV all the way to $75K+:
Subaru outback 2.4T = 86 (reliability=average)
Ford Edge 2.0T = 83
Subaru Forester 2.5L = 89 (reliability=above average)
Kia Telluride 3.8L = 97 (reliability=excellent) (one of the best ever score)
Hyundai Palisade 3.8L = 85 (similar to the above)
Toyota Highlander 3.5L = 84
Toyota Highlander 2.5 Hybrid = 83
BMW X5 3.0T = 84 (reliability=average)
Lexus RX 450 Hybrid = 83 (reliability=above average)
BTW, Mercedes gets one of the lowest score for most models with reliability=worse. BMW reliability is usually average
If you are a number guy and take all the emotions out...the choice gets pretty simple.
If I want a sedan = Camry. Audi A4 is a smaller car and about 50% more expensive + less than half MPG. BMW 750I is 3 times more expensive.
SUV=Subaru for small or bigger = Telluride still under $40K
